A flat cap offers a different silhouette than a brimmed hat: its small visor frames the face while the fabric sets the tone of the outfit. For fall, wool and tweed provide interesting textures to compare. But a photo or the word “winter” in a page URL are not enough to determine the composition. Here’s how to choose a flat cap by examining the model’s information.
Wool, tweed: read the composition before the pattern
Wool refers to a fiber; tweed refers to a type of fabric. So a herringbone pattern alone does not confirm the exact composition. Check the material of the outer fabric, the lining, and the label information. A cap with a winter look can also use other fibers: for example, the Finley Carbon Dasmarca is described as cotton and polyester. It shouldn’t be presented as a wool model.
For a documented example of wool, see the Ivy Contemporary Wigens flat cap. Its mottled brown and fine blue stripes give a solid basis to match texture and color.
Matching texture to a coat
With a solid coat, a herringbone or mottled fabric can become the visible detail of the outfit. If the jacket already features a strong pattern, choose a simpler cap to avoid too many contrasts. It’s not necessary to find the exact same brown or gray; instead, observe the overall look in daylight.
The Ivy Wigens cap in Harris Tweed displays herringbone in burgundy, blue, and gray tones. Look at its photos and description to decide if this mix complements your usual clothes. The colors in the illustration with our mascot are a staging, not an exact product reproduction.
Compare the cut and visor
Two flat caps can differ in volume, seams, and visor length. A close-fitting cut gives a different effect than a looser shape. Examine profile and front views; the name “Ivy” or “flat cap” does not guarantee identical dimensions between brands. A visor sewn to the main part is part of the model’s construction: do not try to detach it.
Choose size without relying on stretching
Measure your head circumference where the cap will rest, without squeezing. Our head circumference measurement guide explains preparation. Then compare this measurement to the actual sizes offered. An S or M size shouldn’t be arbitrarily converted into centimeters: ask for the model’s correspondence if it’s missing.
The cap should remain comfortable to wear without squeezing. Do not wet or heat it to try resizing. For care, follow the label instructions, let it dry away from heat sources, and store it without crushing the visor.
